AirAsia: MAS shares purchase claim not true
In a statement issued this afternoon, Fernandes and his deputy Kamarudin Meranun said they wish to clarify that the claim as reported over the last two days, is not true.
“As the major shareholders of AirAsia Berhad and AirAsia X Sdn Bhd, we are committed to increasing shareholder value in both our core investments by continuously exploring various opportunities to enhance our franchise,” they said.
According to a Star report quoting sources, the alleged deal was struck last week after negotiations over the past year.
Talks over the matter became urgent after MAS' poor showing in the last two quarters.
Under the purported agreement, Fernandes was to get 20 percent of MAS equity, with some sources saying it had already received the government's approval and could be inked by Monday.
Industry players, said the Star, expressed surprise at the deal because of past animosity between the management of the two airlines.
Those who were aware of the negotiations were also surprised at the speed at which it was concluded.
Earlier today, Transport Minister Kong Cho Ha described the purported deal as a good development for the local airline industry.
Fernandes as shareholder of MAS would not only help pull it out of a business slump but also enhance cooperation in the airline industry, said Kong.
"Both companies can cooperate on which routes to operate in order to enhance operating costs," Bernama reported Kong as saying in Kota Kinabalu today.
It was rumoured that Fernandes was going to ink the deal some time next week.
Reports incorrect
Meanwhile Khazanah Nasional Bhd also denied media reports that AirAsia Bhd's Tony Fernandes will emerge as the single largest shareholder with a 20 per cent stake in Malaysian Airline System Bhd (MAS) in a share swap deal.
"These reports are incorrect," the government's investment arm said in a brief statement in Kuala Lumpur today.
Both Fernandes and Kamarudin Meranum, the two major shareholders of AirAsia and AirAsia X Sdn Bhd, said in separate statements that there was no truth to the media reports.
The reports said the move was to bring in Fernandes and turn around the financially-troubled national carrier.
Khazanah said: "The aviation sector is a strategic sector to the economy and MAS remains a core holding in Khazanah Nasional's portfolio. Khazanah will continue to maintain its position as the single largest shareholder in MAS."
Khazanah holds about a 70 per cent stake in MAS.
"As an active strategic investor, Khazanah constantly reviews ways to improve the performance of its portfolio companies and concurrently the competitiveness of key strategic sectors of the economy," it said.
Khazanah, which also holds equity in AirAsia's major shareholder, Tune Air Sdn Bhd, said further announcements would be made at the appropriate time with regards to Khazanah's position in MAS' ongoing transformation plan. - Malaysiakini
NEW AROMATHERAPY FOR PUTATAN?
BLOCK….Hiew and Edward watching the workers pumping the foul water from a block sewerage manhole.
By : DAP MEDIA
THE PEOPLE in Putatan are really angry with the constant sewerage blockage and the inconvenience caused by the overflowing of foul sewerage water all over the place especially near the eating shops and clinic.
PR KK MP Hiew King Cheu and Edward Ewol Mujie were brought in to inspect the situation of the sewerage overflowing in the Putatan town area. The sewerage system in Putatan town is not being built according to the fast development in the area.
There is no central sewerage system and no proper central sewerage treatment plant. The foul water is being distributed into small septic tanks or individual package treatment plants. In some area, the foul sewerage has to be pumped and transported away for disposal by tanker trucks.
There are frequent blockages of the sewer pipes in the shop lots and causing overflow of foul water onto the pavement of the shops next to the Putatan Tamu ground. The Putatan Council has to stand by workers to pump up the dirty foul water from the overflowing manhole to discharge into a nearby septic tank to be transported away by sewerage tanker trucks regularly. Hiew and Edward witnessed one of the operations on the pumping of foul water.
MP Hiew wants the Putatan Council to immediate work on the long term plan and design to implement a proper sewerage disposal system in the whole of Putatan town and for the nearby housing estate and any future development. We cannot sit and do nothing while the town is expending at a very rapid rate, and the sewerage problem keep piling up to cause severe pollution of the area.
He suggested that the raw sewerage from Putatan can be easily connected to the new sewerage treatment plant located at the Penampang By-pass in Kapayan. This is just a few kilometers away from Putatan.
Pastor Ho refused to meet JAIS Officers
At the Damansara Utama Methodist Church (DUMC) morning mass today, Senior Pastor Daniel Ho was said to have admitted to the congregation that he deliberately refused to meet JAIS Officers at JAIS Head Office.
On the raid the ‘Dream Centre’ on Wednesday night 3 Aug 2011 by JAIS Officers, Pastor Ho was also said to have been very adamant about the event on was purely “Social in nature”. He was believed to be insistent about the program which involved Malay Muslims in DUMC was about ‘social service’ and “Helping the unfortunates”.
Malay Bibles are some the evidence found amongst the Malay Muslim at DUMC on Wednesday 3 Aug 2011
However, evidence obtained from the twelve Malay Muslims on Wednesday night suggests there was some sort protelyzation process ongoing. Amongst the items discovered are Bibles in Malay and other related documents. Reports also stated that Malay Muslims in dire financial state have been ‘befriended’. Berita Harian also reported that one of them admitted some 100 single mothers are amongst this group.
This admission of refusal to co-operate with JAIS Officers in the investigation demonstrate a blatant disregard for authorities and the administration of Islam, as the religion of the Federation of Malaysia. This is also reflecting the Opposition’s strategy of ‘Politics of Hatred’, with the consistent demonization of law enforcements agencies and authorities.
Amongst those who attended today’s service are Chinese Chauvinists DAP Leaders Secretary General and Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, ADUN for Kinrara and Exco in-charge of Investment, Industry and Commerce Theresa Kok and ADUN for Subang Jaya Hannah Yeo. The strong Chinese Chaunivist DAP patronage immediately after the raid by JAIS is evidently clear that they are indirectly using church as an apparatus for their politics.
On 5 May 2011 in Penang, DAP MP for Jelutong Jeff Ooi organized a dinner for some pastors as part of the post-Sarawak April State Elections. In the zest to that dinner event, they vowed “To have a Christian as the PM” and “Make Christianity as one of the official religion of Federation of Malaysia”

English education failure?
Muhyiddin Yassin, our DPM and Education minister said he is stumped as to why the standard of English could not be improved in the curriculum. Isn't it obvious that when the teachers could not string a sentence properly, what do you expect the students to learn? I would hazard a guess that they would also struggle with basic English grammar in that light.
It is time we arrest the ghastly level of English proficiency in our TEACHERS first. Then at least you have a hope in getting the students to learn. Hiring external help is not the solution. The problem is not admitting that our lowly level of education standard and the rate of passing underperforming graduates are the major concern. Only then would hiring professional English lecturers and tutors help. English proficiency decline is therefore but the symptom of his bafflement. Also, having the Information ministry broadcast that learning English is not unpatriotic would actually start pointing to the right direction.
If he was brave enough to revert Science and Mathematics to Bahasa Malaysia soon, I wonder if he has the guts to do away with buckling to the pressure of the ultra conservative Malays and that improving our standard of tertiary education! He is put in such a time like this with the authority to do so. Only time will tell if he can lived up to that expectation.
